ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: BRIAN SULLIVAN
When did you start doing CrossFit and how did you get into it?
Started in Jan of 2014 as a way to help my running and for another challenge after doing marathons and endurance events for the previous 6 years.
What’s your favorite type of workout and movement in CrossFit?
Murph (w/ vest and unpartitioned) is my favorite WOD, its the best combination of a complete mind game wod. Every person who has ever done Murph has hit the point where they no longer want to do the workout, or want to slow down. But its like fighting a Gorilla, you can't stop when your tired, you can only stop when the Gorilla is done.
Box Jumps. 5'5" doesn't mean no hops! haha
What type of exercise were you doing before CrossFit?
Spent 6 years doing marathons or other ultra endurance events. In HS I played Golf, Baseball, and Basketball
Tell us a little about your personal and professional accomplishments – what are you proud of?
Personally I work for a sweet company (Hershey) ...pun intended. Which has been great, but sadly the reason I am leaving (but will be visiting often).
This past year I was able to raise $ for Misacordia, which is a community for adults with disabilities (where my godmother lives). For every dollar donated (many from Reebok members, thank you!) I did a flight of stairs with a vest.
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, other interests, etc.). Anything funny or interesting?
Not sure if people know but I am a huge Chicago sports fan. The 2016 Chicago Cubs changed my life, literally!
I like to workout to odd music sometimes. For long wods I like to listen to Rod Stewart, Jim Croce, and other slower music
What are your CrossFit goals and have you achieved any of those goals, how’s it going so far?
My crossfit goals keep evolving, which is whats great about CF. My most recent goal has been to come back from my elbow injury (full reconstruction). The Dr said it would be a year of recovery and i would probably have to change my activities going forward. MY GOAL was to be able to compete in the Open (154 days post surgery), and by being in the gym and staying active I think i will be able to compete in all Open WODs and hopefully do some of them RX
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym?
Because I've moved a lot some of my closest friends have been met in the gym, without CF i wouldn't have met so many incredible people.
The enhanced total fitness I've gained has allowed me to be able to say "Yes" to any activity.
Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?
The support the community has given me is incredibly humbling. I LOVE achieving new PRs and stuff like that within the gym. But when i got injured I got more texts, calls, apartment cleanings (thanks Devore cleaning service), recovery rooms (thanks Meg) than I ever thought. The community is something people who don't understand, and don't know how much it means
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Reebok CrossFit Charlotte-Uptown?
Get involved, be uncomfortable, work harder than you think is possible
Something you might not know about me is?
I end all of my receipts with 23 as my everyday tribute to Michael Jordan. Jordan was the 2nd word I ever said and since he was able to give the Chicago Bulls the "Flu Game" I feel it's only fitting give him that tribute everyday (I know it's crazy)
Finally, please feel free to add your thoughts regarding your experience at Reebok CrossFit Charlotte-Uptown so far?
There aren't enough words to explain how much RCFC has meant to me over the last 2 years, and how much I will miss every aspect of the gym. All of the friendships I've been fortunate enough to gain from RCFC mean so much to me. Most of my greatest moments have been either at or with people from the gym.
My sincerest thank you to everyone at RCFC for dealing with the overly competitive, loud, Cubs fan, who likes dumb workouts. I have been humbled at every turn to be friends with so many incredible people.
